Today you can buy a diamond almost anywhere: a mall jeweller, a big website, an Instagram page, or the family jeweller your parents have used for years. Each option has real strengths and real blind spots. Here is an honest look at all of them.
1. Traditional retail stores
Good: You can see and touch the jewelry. Watch out for: limited stock on hand, rent and staff costs built into the price, and sales teams trained to sell what is in the showcase rather than what is right for you.
2. Large online retailers
Good: Huge selection and easy filtering by grades. Watch out for: you are choosing from photos and a certificate. Two stones with the same grades can look completely different, and a filter cannot tell you which one is better.
3. Social media sellers
Good: Beautiful content and sometimes attractive prices. Watch out for: lighting and editing that flatter every stone, uncertain after-sale support, and certificates that are hard to verify.
4. The family jeweller
Good: Trust and a long relationship. Watch out for: small inventory and less access to the wider diamond market, so you may be choosing from a handful of stones rather than the best one available. (Our Hindi video at the top of this post covers this comparison.)
