It is also one of the easiest shapes to get wrong. Here is what we look at before recommending a pear to a client.

1. The bow-tie

Most pear shapes show a darker "bow-tie" across the middle. A light, soft bow-tie is normal. A dark, heavy one steals brilliance, and it is not shown on any certificate. You can only judge it by looking at the actual stone.

2. Length-to-width ratio

This decides the silhouette. Many people like a ratio of roughly 1.45 to 1.75. Lower looks short and wide; higher looks long and slender. There is no single right answer, but it should match your taste and your hand.

3. Symmetry

The two shoulders should match, and the point should line up with the centre of the rounded end. Small asymmetries are very visible in a pear, even when the certificate grade looks fine.

4. Colour at the tip

Colour tends to gather toward the point of a pear. A stone that looks white face-up may show a hint of tint at the tip, so check it in person or in a clear video.

5. Protect the point

The tip is the most fragile part. A V-prong or a well-placed claw protects it in everyday wear. Because Allyours pieces are made to order, we design the setting around your specific stone.

6. Where the inclusions sit

An inclusion near the point can be a durability risk. One tucked near the edge of the rounded end may be almost invisible. This is where an expert can often save you money on clarity without any visible difference.

Love pear shapes? Get a quote and we will shortlist pears with good shape, light bow-ties and the right ratio for you.
